THE PEPS STORY

It all started with a spring mattress manufacturing factory that came up for sale in Coimbatore in 2005-2006. People hadn’t fully woken up to spring mattresses in South India, and hence it was a purchase decision that posed a huge risk for Mr.K . Madhavan, and his Partners G. Shankar Ram, and P. Manjunath.

The industry at that time was dominated by cotton and coir mattresses with just one player in the spring mattress category. What’s more, customers identified spring with something rickety and uncomfortable, low on durability but high on maintenance and cost.And when they could buy three conventional mattresses for the price of one spring mattresses, why would they even consider it?

There were other issues too, the predominant one being people’s belief that sleep was not worth investing! It was an industry with the lowest customer involvement.

But isn’t that what makes the dream worthy of pursuing? Peps Leadership had to invest considerable time in educating the customer right from the sleep positions to type of mattress and the technology and materials that were used to build it. Pioneering a new movement in the mattress industry, Peps went on to cross the hurdles, break the ice and reach out to the customer by highlighting the importance of making everyday sleep a comfortable, healthy and safe experience.

In their first year Peps went on to manufacture roughly 8,700 mattresses; but by 2013-14 they managed to increase it to 1.48 lakh mattresses and managed to spark off a sleep revolution in India.

Today, Peps Industries Private Limited or Peps as every customer calls it, is a Rs.325 crore turnover company, and a leading mattress brand in India, with 600 employees, and 6,000 retail dealers, and a 56 per cent market share of spring mattresses in India.

In the coming years, Peps plans to scale up on its retail reach and offer an immersive experience to facilitate the purchasing process.It also plans to reach out to markets beyond South India and expand to Western markets.

Apart from these, PEPS also has its own range of pillows and comforters, sub-branded as
Hypnos, Komfy and others. Hypnos is the go-to pillow for comfort and long-term freedom from back and shoulder aches, while Komfy is a feather soft comforter.

MANUFACTURING FACILITY

Peps has a 11-acre state-of-the-art Inner Spring manufacturing unit in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu with two ancillary facilities in North and Western India. These include strategic business units (SBUs) in Pune (for the western market) producing 6,000 mattresses per month, a SBU in Delhi (producing 8,000 mattresses per month) and a SBU in Kolkata to cater to the eastern region, which produces 5,000-6,000 mattresses per month.

Peps Industries is India's only manufacturer of sleep systems to match the exact quality and technology benchmarks defined by Restonic Corporation of USA. The R&D at Peps works constantly to upgrade the product range and have added to the cutting-edge features that include:

K Madhavan

Managing Director

K. Madhavan started off as a management trainee in the rubber industry and subsequently joined Kurl-on Bangalore, where he was an integral part of the company's growth story right from 1977 to 2007. Widely regarded as an authority in the mattress industry, Madhavan is one of the pioneers of the concept of branded mattresses. With his foresight and invaluable expertise, he envisioned to position innerspring mattresses as an affordable luxury mattress - a vision that’s now a reality, with Peps Industries.

G. Shankar Ram

Joint Managing Director

G. Shankar Ram is known to peers and colleagues as an astute businessman. He spotted an untapped opportunity when the branded mattress segment in the country boomed. With the concept of an ancillary, not used too often in this segment, he ventured to establish what is now a 100 employee rubberized coir manufacturing unit at Hosur in Tamil Nadu. Shankarram's keen business acumen was at play again when the opportunity to be part of the Peps revolution came by.

P. Manjunath

Director

P. Manjunath's conviction was vindicated when Peps went from strength to strength, built its own world-class facility and solid market credibility with a great brand like Restonic. He started his career at an ancillary unit of Indian Telephone Industry way back in 1989. He then took over a PCB manufacturing unit and transformed it into a PCB supplier for several firms in India and across the world.
